For a lot of people getting to know the great pyramids in Egypt is a dream. Happily this dream came true for me and all I can say is that it was an incredible experience.

At first I was a little concerned about going to Egypt since I was not sure if it would be a safe place to go right now. I asked a few friends who enjoyed traveling but none of them had been there, so I started to look up online and decided to be brave and just go.

Since my main goal was to see the pyramids of Giza I opted to stay in Giza and not Cairo. I stayed at a hotel with a view of the pyramids and it was very nice to know that landmark history was so close to me.

Its true the things in Egypt are cheap but bargain for a better price is a must there. People will probably charge you more for everything since you are a tourist. I learned that right at the airport. My trip from airport to Giza would had cost me about 20 dollars with a cab driver at the airport after negotiating with the driver, but since I had pre booked with my hotel I paid about 40 dollars, lesson learned, I did not use any more transportation from hotel since hotel would not negotiate it.

First morning in Egypt I left the hotel for a walk and many street drivers came up to me offering their service. One of them seemed to be very nice, he showed me a book with many people reviewing hiswork so I took him as my driver. Hossam  was not just a driver, he was also my security and friend for the couple days in Egypt, he took me for lunch at a local place, we smoke shisha together, while drinking some tea. Hanging out with him really felt like having a real Egyptian experience. Its true he took me to a few shops as I believe is part of routine in Cairo for drivers while driving tourists since but I was always asked if I wanted to go first and the vendors were not persistent trying to sell their products, they were quite nice and I had the opportunity to meet great, simple and nice people.

I felt lucky being in Egypt at this time because there were many international tourists around, it really felt like a very private experience and a good chance to connect with the locals.

So far, out of all the countries I’ve been Egypt seems to be the poorest country. I felt good being able to visit such amazing place, be part of ancient history and contribute  to the economy of this country. One of the many things that makes me happy about traveling the world is to have the opportunity to share with others, specially poor countries, the blessings of the first world economy.

I must say that one of the things that made me want to scream out loud of excitement was when I had the opportunity to ride a camel in the desert while observing the pyramids of Gaza, contemplating 5000 years of pure history. That was incredible, something Ill keep alive in my heart for the rest of my life. So grateful for it.
